You’re probably wondering why I would willingly choose to enter the space of grief.
Here’s the tea…
I have done caring and skilled work with families all of my life. Working in Emergency Services, Social Services, and as a Birth Doula, I have witnessed pain, struggle, and empowerment. These roles developed my ability to act calmly, listen actively, and hold nonjudgmental space with genuine empathy.
After having a birth client who lost their baby, I decided to become certified in bereavement support. During that process, I found that there weren’t many local resources for families coping with pregnancy and infant loss. This drove me to take action.
I contacted the hospital and obstetric providers I already had a relationship with and proposed a more patient-centered approach to loss. The hospital welcomed my proposal and contracted with me to provide support to families admitted for loss, and to create support groups and mourning opportunities. I try to make a difference in the experience of these families.
Now I want to share what I’ve learned. I want to empower families to embrace healing without feeling alone or devalued. And equip birth workers with skills and tools to enter the space of grief with confidence.
